When is your toddler ready for pre-school?
This is a question I have been grappling with for the last 6 months or so. My daughter is a very social little girl and lights up whenever she is around other kids. But, unfortunately, that doesn’t happen as often as we would like.
We live in a somewhat rural area and its is difficult to get together with my friends who have children my daughter’s age. I tried connecting with the local Mom’s Group but again, it was hard to coordinate naptimes, mealtimes, work schedules etc.
This past weekend, my husbands cousin and her family paid us a visit all the way from California. She has a 2 year old little girl, a 4month old little boy and they had a blast together…for the most part.
There were moments, more than I would have liked, when my daughter seemed to lose it a bit. The lack of routine was part of it, but the effects of not having regular interaction with her peers was at the heart of the outbursts.
We would be having a fine time and quite suddenly, my daughter would be no where to be found. I quickly scanned the house and would find her upstairs in her room or out on our sun porch coloring by herself. She was intentionally removing herself from the situation. I’m not sure what to make of it.
Is she ready for the structure of pre-school or would that be too much for her? The only way to find out will be to try it. So I have made some phone calls and found a great facility just a few miles away in a neighboring town. Its called Kids Cove run by two former teachers. We have an appointment for a tour tomorrow afternoon, we’ll see how it goes. I’ll keep you posted.
I would love to hear about your experience with this, please add your comments below.
